How time seems to fly when we are hunting! It seems too soon to be time for our mid season newsletter. We have had a truly phenomenal season with old and new clients and the trophy quality speaks volumes for our hunting areas and professional hunters alike.

The first painting is along a path that leads from my neighborhood and looks at Whitehorse Ledge… I love the dead trees. With the cooler weather the geese are back enjoying the streams and ponds. Painting three is one of my favorite scenes. I have painted Mt Chocorua many times and always enjoy it, especially at this time of year. – Grant Hacking

We started the season nice and early with a wonderful combination of friendship and hunting, Nick and Nellie join me for their 19th safari with me to Africa! Trophy hunting was not on the cards except for a Hartmanns Zebra which we had never taken in the past. Gemsbok, wildebeest and Eland all proved once again to be a challenging hunt and we had some fantastic close encounters in the thick, green bush of the Limpopo Province.

Vol. 9 Number 2 and 3
In this edition you will find a CIC press release regarding the European Commission CITES Conference. Dr. Rolf Baldus attended this meeting for the CIC and his statement that “CITES decisions must take into account the needs of rural people, who live side by side with the wildlife that we want to conserve” (p. 5) reverberates through quite a few other articles in this issue. Wild-life – in order to survive and prosper – must deliver tangible bene-fits to rural people who live side by side with wild animals. Rural Africans are perfectly capable to care for their very own wildlife heritage with the right tools and enabling legislation, as the Namib-ian example shows, Kenya is the other side of the coin – where the absence of any use produces continually declining wildlife popula-tions. Tanzania probably is right now at a cross road and needs to contemplate actions carefully.
